Protocol

The first portion of the URL specifies the protocol/language to use when requesting the object/service.

The most common types of protocols used on the Internet are:

• http - Non-secure protocol for web pages

• https - Secure protocol for web pages (Ecommerce checkout pages, web forms, etc.)

• ftp - Non-secure protocol for file transfers

• rts - Real time protocol for transmitting video

• mms - Microsoft Media Server for transmitting video

If you type a URL without the protocol in the address field of your web browser, the browser will automatically assume you want the "http" protocol and enter "http://" before the address you typed.
