DNS - Domain Name Service

DNS is the service that translates a domain name into an IP address.

It is a software program which runs on a server that must be accessible 24 hours a day.

When you register a domain name, you are asked to specify the primary and secondary DNS servers, or to use the Registrar's DNS servers. The DNS servers you use are typically those of your Internet Provider or your Web Hosting Company. You will need to ask them for the names of these servers, and they will need to configure their DNS software to tell the world the IP addresses for your domains.

The Registrar of your domain name tells the world where to go to translate your domain name into an IP address.
